Air India Extends State-of-the-Art B777 to all Long Haul Destinations

Oct 10, 2009 Air India has been one of the few airlines inducting new aircraft regularly. With more than half of the fleet now comprising new aircraft, it has given the airline an opportunity to rework its Winter Schedule in such a manner as to provide passengers with a product that matches the best in the industry, both on international and domestic sectors. Of the 111 new aircraft on order, Air India has received and inducted 64 aircraft so far. This includes nine B777-300ER, eight B777-200LR, 15 each of A321 and A319 aircraft, besides 17 B737-800 aircraft for Air India Express.
Effective October 25, 2009, Air India will deploy the B777 to all its seven West-bound destinations and one to Tokyo. Presently, the comfort and luxury of the state-of-the-art B777s is available on Air India flights to New York, Chicago, Frankfurt and London. The same high quality product will be now be extended to Newark, Paris, Toronto and Tokyo, thus ensuring a consistent and superior product on long haul destinations in the USA, Europe, Canada and to Tokyo.
Winter Schedule 2009
- The existing Amritsar-London-Toronto flight will now operate with a B777-300ER, four days a week out of Amritsar. On the remaining three days, the flight will originate from Delhi, thus giving Delhi passengers a direct connection to London-Toronto
- The existing thrice weekly flight to Paris will now be operated with B777-200LR instead of A330.
- Similarly, the product upgrade has also been extended to the four weekly flights to Tokyo, with the deployment of a B777-200LR instead of A330.
- Besides these, additional flights on the Mumbai-Riyadh and Delhi-Riyadh routes will take the total frequencies from India-Riyadh to 11 per week from the existing nine. All the 11 flights will be operated with B777-200ER aircraft instead of B747-400.
- A daily non-stop A319 flight will be introduced between Chennai and Muscat.
- The Air India Express flight on the Kozhikode-Muscat-Kozhikode route will now become a daily flight as against the four times a week. Similarly, the Kozhikode-Doha-Bahrain flight will become a daily flight. Kochi-Muscat-Kochi flight will operate five times a week instead of twice.
- Air India Express will see an increase in capacity with the introduction of all-economy A320 aircraft on its services to Dubai, Sharjah, Kuala Lumpur and Colombo, from various cities in India.
The B777 experience
Air India's deployment of the new B777-200LR aircraft for its NonStop service from Delhi/Mumbai to New York, created a new benchmark in travel on the Indo-US sector. Besides providing speed, comfort and better connectivity, the B777s, which are specially designed for long haul travel, offer several features that make long-haul travel more comfortable and enjoyable.
- While the B777 300-ER has a total of 342 seats in three-class configuration of four First Class, 35 Executive Class and 303 Economy Class seats, the B777-200LR has a capacity of 238 seats, with eight seats in First Class, 35 in Executive Class and 195 in Economy Class.
- Each First Class seat in B777-300ER is an individual cabin by itself, offering the premium traveller luxury, privacy and comfort. The seat is 23 inches wide with a pitch of 80 inches and converts into a 31 inches full flat bed. The seat offers lumbar support, a massage system, stowage compartments and adjustable reading light on the seat shell. The 19.5 inches wide Executive Class seat with a pitch of 76 inches, transforms into a 26.5 inches full flat bed. The Economy Class seats, too, are comfortable with 18 inches wide seats, with a pitch of 33 inches. The seats have a roller type therapeutic leg rest for added comfort.
- In the B777-200LR, each First Class seat with a width of 21 inches, can be transformed into a fully horizontal flat bed, 77 inches long and 31 inches wide. A buddy seat has also been provided for those wishing to hold face-to-face discussions. In Executive Class, each seat of 20 inches width can be transformed into a 72 inches long flat bed. For those travelling Economy Class, each seat with a width of 18.5 inches, has been ergonomically designed and has a therapeutic foot rest.
- A USB port enables passengers to connect electronic devices like laptops and digital cameras.
- A choice of 250 hours of video and 150 hours of audio programmes is available on the latest Thales i5000 inflight entertainment system. Individual monitors and high noise immunity provide for a personalised and pleasant entertainment experience.
- Gourmet food served with carefully selected wines and beverages. A wide choice of cuisine like Indian, Continental and Oriental is available. Exclusive convenio service that allows First Class passengers to choose the time of meal.
- Mood lighting in the entire aircraft in soft shades of mauve, green and pink, is relaxing.
With more new aircraft joining, Air India will soon have a young and modern fleet of aircraft deployed on all its long, medium and short haul international and domestic routes.
